  Health is our most precious commodity. All the wealth in the world is not of much use, if we do not have  good health. There may not be a cure for all illnesses, but we should do whatever we can to maintain good health. This could be having regular check ups, eating properly, exercizing regularly and taking dietary supplements, stop smoking, and controlling our weight.

  There is a heriditary link in families. If a parent or grand parent has a particular type of illness, then the offspring shoud take extra precaution for that illness. This is true for mental and physical illness. Mental illness can be just as disabilitating as a physical illness.

  Obesity is becoming a big problem. Maintaining a proportion of weight to height is necessary. Most dietary plans do not work for a prolonged period of time. Crash diets only complicate  the issue, the weight that is lost comes back with a vengance. A change in lifestyle is necessary with an a proper diet plan and execise.

  Mental illness can be much harder to define. The outward appearance might not show any symptoms. If there is a big change in a persons behaviour, it should be checked out. One of the biggest mental illnesses is depression. At one time or another about 20% of a population can be afflicted in their lifetime. Autism, bi-polar and schizophrenia are more serious and can affect one in one hundred of a population. In all cases early intervention will help dramatically.

  Three of the most common supplements are vitamin D, calcium and multivitamins. It is recommend that one should take 1000iu of vitamin D and 1000mg of calcium daily. The multivitamins can be taylored to the individuals need. I  take vitmin D, Calcium, vitamin C and a Multivitamin daily and very seldon will ever get a cold.

  Holistic medicine has its place. In should be used in conjunction with regular medicine and not replace it.  Regular prescription medicine can be expensive, alternates can be found at a much lower cost.

 We must not forget dental hygiene. Teeth should be brushed once a day with a suitable tooth brush and tooth paste. If our teeth are maintained our health will be maintained by proper chewing. You should see your dentist once a year to check your teeth.

  In Canada, we have a good health care system that covers most medical cost with the exception of dental. When our snowbirds go south they have to carry extra coverage. The present U.S. administration is trying to get universal low cost medical coverage.
